Costa Rica - Security

Lost Cell Phone Scam Might Lead to....

You arrive in Costa Rica and are so delighted that your $800 Blackberry works perfectly and you only pay $2 or $3 a minute for international roaming.

Not long after you check in to your hotel you meet a nice woman... a student at the university too!

After a couple days you notice your Blackberry is missing! You've been careful not to lose it or let someone pick your pocket. But the phone is no where to be found!

Your friend suggests that you call your phone, just in case you lost it and someone found it. What do you know! Someone answers your phone and says they found it!

Your excited now because you won't lose the $800 phone or more importantly, all the information stored on it! The person that found your phone says they want a small finders fee.

You think that's great $5 or $10.... now your in for the big surprise. You'll be lucky if the finders fee is anything less than half the value of the phone or more! You'll also be lucky if you aren't jerked around for days or weeks before you get your phone back.

Now you would have been very smart to have picked up a cheap $20 phone with a line when you got to Costa Rica... no data to worry about and a throw away price!

There are infinite variations of the above.

Now your friend has discovered what a big sucker you are... so its time to move ahead. She tells you about a family gathering at some friends house and wants to borrow your camera.

Being the generous type you give her your camera for the day and she is so excited she'll be able to bring back photos for you.

When you see her the next day, her demeanor is not so good. She is crying and has a bit story about how she broke a vase or spilled red wine on a white carpet and the host of the part kept your camera as security. The host probably kept her cell phone too.

Now, the damages not surprisingly are almost the same as the value of your camera! Your friend doesn't have that kind of money but promises if you loan it to her she'll get a job and pay you back.

You'd probably be wise to chalk that camera up to your stupidity rather than buy it back. The cycle can really go on for ever.... or until you run out of money and/or gadgets.

The cycle will keep on going and going? well, not unless you break it. Put spontaneity and direction to your or your friends life in order to avoid losing valuable items and money. If you carefully plan on what to buy, and who to talk to then I believe you can break that continuous loop. What if you are losing money? The important thing is you are earning more than what you are spending.

Okay I am not to sure what is going on here. Martin, are you saying that you lost your phone and then had to pay to get it back, and then shortly after that you let a "friend" borrow your camera and they did not give it back? If this is the case then I would suggest not lending your valuable things out, and also to be more careful with where and who you put or lend things to. You should know that these days you DEFINETLY CAN NOT trust ANYONE! Good Luck, and be more careful.

I'll have to agree with Joelene here. Not everyone can be trusted, especially if it concerns money and valuable things. Even in the business aspect, it is not recommended that you partner up with a friend because it might and will probably ruin your friendship with that person. You can lend your friends advice, a helping hand or two but avoid lending them those hardly earned money or prized possession. See what happened at Martin's case?

What an interesting story. Did you ever get any of your stuff back?

There is nothing really big about this. This is just a simple case of people being so gullible and all Yes-es. Sometimes we really should know how to say "No" even to a friend. If you have really nothing and that item is very important to you then why bother to share it to your friend.

I guess you are right I just think stories like this are interesting because I would never do something like that.

This to me just means that your a push over and even your friend knew it so they took the only thing nice you had left, and its obvious to me that they are not your true friend.

I don't agree on jejomarminay here. if you are a "true" friend you will trust your friend. Lending or sharing money to put up a business is a good idea if shared with a friend.

Sometimes its trust that makes us successful. jejomarminay, are u sure you are true with your friend or your only concern is your money.

Hi to all, I think it is not always the case. Like you thought that this person was a friend until he does something wrong to your stuff and to you as well. You can never trust anyone. You have to consider this harsh truth all of the time since we are living in a harsh world, right? Anyway, have a great day guys and just keep all of those post coming.
