Petty Extortion, How a Costa Rican Gets Their Way

Let's say you have a problem with a Costa Rican. Maybe it is something simple like they are upset you called the Police after they removed furniture from your house.

They are really upset because even though the Police wouldn't take a complaint, they had to move all the furniture back. What can they do?

They will see you are someone that visits Costa Rica often, and/or a resident of Costa Rica. So they tell you the problem will be resolved once and for all... they are going to have a chat with Immigration and soon you'll never in your life be able to enter Costa Rica (and if you have residency it will be a thing of the past)!

Of course, if you stop doing whatever is annoying them, they won't bother Immigration about your "bad behavior"... and you'll be free of the horrors of deportation and being barred from Costa Rica.

Now your "only" choice is to give up what you want (visiting/living in Costa Rica), some money and a bit of your sanity. Another solution might be to seek out the assistance of the U.S. Embassy, though you might find they simply recommend you leave the country for your safety!

Now, I've had a Costa Rican give me the "I'm going to Immigration" spiel... and there seemed to be no result from it. No contact from Immigration. No revocation of my residency. No deportation. I suppose the person never actually made a complaint with Immigration.

I don't suspect the Costa Rican(s) that have targeted you as a source of money really want you to be barred from the country! That would cut off the possibility of any future revenue! But surely, they want to attack you where you are most afraid.... and that would be of course your desire to enjoy the "paradise" of Costa Rica!

However, when the Immigration ploy fails, you could be subjected to stepped up pressure...

That is simply awful. What bullies!

If I would be in that kind of situation then I would chose the another solution to seek the help and assistance of my Embassy. Or if I'm twisted enough I would hire a henchman to scare the fellow off.

The problem in many Latin American countries is that the Embassy can only communicate on your behalf to the authorities that already exist. They don't have American police especially for Americans or German police especially for Germans, everyone must deal with the Costa Rican police...there is so much corruption and sometimes lack of education and laziness.

In countries as such, there is no need for their to be foreign involvement as far as policing is concerned, but at the same time, we need to try to make sure that we keep the local dispatches at bay, by learning about the country's laws, better than their police may even know of. This is a great way to win, always. Especially so, when it is that you are right and you know it.
